transport interchange and exhibition centre: diploma one unit
The area around Portsmouth harbour train station has been neglected for years. It has only been recently with the commercial development of Gunwharf Quays that the area has started to improve. However, the existing transport infrastructure in and around the area is in dire needs of re-thinking and planning.
I propose a new building that brings together the existing modes of transport creating a new landmark for Portsmouth, a gateway that links sea and land.
An ambitious building that looks towards the future, but reflects the strong naval history of the city. A building that not only brings together various modes of public transport, but also becomes a catalyst for new ideas in architecture and urban planning.
The building is a mechanism for the exploration of a new architecture, one that apart from just looking functionality also engages sculpture, mass and aesthetics.
The building has two distinct zones. One, a transport interchange bringing together buses, trams, ferries and taxis. The other, an architecture centre with large semi-enclosed external space for many diverse activities bringing together people and ideals.
